It’s our mission to lift you up on wheels. We get you rolling by providing rollerskating instruction, events and gear. We help you grow by connecting you to rollerskating education, fitness and community.
We believe once you desire to strap on roller skates, you are a member of the community.
All abilities are welcome. Whether you are curious about rollerskating, new to rollerskating, a path skater, a ramp skater, interested in rollerdance or a roller derby skater, your contributions are important and valued. Rollerskating is more fun in a group! Let’s meet up and roll!
We believe in creating a diverse skating community for all levels of rollers.
Learn To Rollerskate YQL was founded by Martina Emard (aka Cherri Blaster) in the summer of 2016 in Lehbridge, Alberta. Its initial purpose was to grow recreational rollerskating through free outdoor rolling meetups.
It was soon realized that even though rollerskating is viewed as a positive activity, it had high barriers to entry due to lack of local retailers providing gear, lack of professional instruction and general fear of trying something new in an unpredictable (outdoor) environment.
We believe in sharing the community’s skill and knowledge.
Over the next two years Cherri addressed the barriers by acquiring gear inventory, earning instructor certification and registering as a business to earn revenue to put toward renting safe rollerskating environments.
In the summer of 2018 Learn To Rollerskate YQL test-marketed a 5-week rollerdance class for advanced skaters and a 3-week rollerdance for roller beginners with revenues funding a free outdoor roller disco in Rotary Square at Casa.
We believe in accessible rollerskating over excessive profit.
The experiment was necessary to validate Learn To Rollerskate YQL’s existence and their role in the community. It was less about providing rollerskates and instruction and more about facilitating the community; it was less about being lifted by rollerskate wheels and more about lifting hearts and minds; and it was less about making profit and more about making opportunities.
We’ll help you rollerskate.
Want to try?
In 2020, Learn To Rollerskate YQL changed their name to Roller Skate Lethbridge, to better reflect the roller skate opportunities in the city. We look forward to serving you!
