How to turn around on roller skates

Roller skate transitions can be tricky to master because it combines forward skating, backwards skating, forward-back-side-to-side weight transfer and upper body co-ordination. But there are fundamental skills you can work on before you attempt your first turn.

Coast on one foot

To complete a transition you will be on one skate for a brief moment. Build your confidence and make sure you can hold a single foot glide on each foot for a good distance.

Skate backwards

The last step of a transition is skating backwards, so make sure you practice before attempting one! Start with backwards bubbles and work up to alternating pushes. Tuck your elbows behind your body to keep your upper body in a good position – like T-Rex arms!

Look behind

Skate forward, coast in a staggered stance and look behind you. Hold that position. Change your shoulder check by alternating your forward foot.

Toe rolls

Skate forward, coast in a staggered stance and lift the heel of your back foot. Hold that position. Alternate your forward foot.

Heel rolls

Skate forward, coast in a staggered stance and lift the toe of your front foot. Hold that position. Alternate your forward foot.

Time to practice!
